Google Bard, the Google chatbot put to the test

The last few weeks have seen some big moves from the tech giants. In February 2021, the launch of the Google Bard chatbot made headlines. This conversational agent should compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which Microsoft wants to integrate into Bing and Edge. But after Google’s announcement, it was a blunder that happened.

What is Google Bard?

Google Bard is a type of artificial intelligence, specifically a chatbot or conversational agent, designed by Google to generate answers to questions or instructions provided by users of the application. It is based on the LaMDA language model and can exploit various information on the Internet to propose relevant answers. Finally, Google Bard can be presented in the form of text directly integrated into its search engine.

Google Bard’s blunder

The first example of prompt, i.e. instruction that one passes to Google Bard, contained a factual error. When Google Bard was asked what the James Webb Space Telescope had discovered and how to tell a 9-year-old about it, he said that the telescope had taken the first images of a planet outside our solar system. However, this discovery was made since 2004, as confirmed by the Nasa website. The stock market did not like this blunder and the price of Alphabet ( Google’s parent company) lost $100 billion in one day.

The situation today

Today, Google Bard is still not publicly available and we are therefore content with the examples provided by Google. To make sure the tool behaves properly, Google tests it again and again. As much to say that its implementation will certainly take more time than expected.

At the same time, delivery robots are being tested in Japan. These small, cubic, four-wheeled robots offer a delivery service that can be very useful in depopulated rural areas and in the face of a shortage of home delivery service workers caused by the sharp decline in population and the explosion of online shopping.

What future for Google Bard?

Although Google Bard is still being tested, one has to wonder about its future. Will chatbots be as successful as delivery robots? What will be its place in the market? The feedback from Internet users remains mixed and there is no shortage of skeptics. Nevertheless, Google starts its promotional campaign to promote its product. We’ll see if, by 2023, Google Bard will have found its place in the market.
